Are you low in Vitamin K?

When it comes to bone health everyone knows about calcium, right? What you don’t know is a more silent, but essential player in terms of bone health and BMD (bone mineral density) …Vitamin K.

Vitamin K refers to a group of fat-soluble vitamins that play a role in blood clotting, bone metabolism, and regulating blood calcium levels.
Vitamin K benefits the body in various ways.

  • Bone health – Several studies have suggested that vitamin K supports the maintenance of strong bones, improves bone density and decreases the risk of fractures.
  • Cognitive health – Increased blood levels of vitamin K have been linked with improved episodic memory in older adults.
  • Heart health – Vitamin K may help keep blood pressure lower by preventing mineralization, where minerals build up in the arteries. This enables the heart to pump blood freely through the body.

Tri-K™ provides a clinically useful dose of vitamin K in three synergistic forms to be used for maintenance or therapeutic dosing.

This vitamin K formula provides:

  • 1000 mcg Vitamin K1—the naturally occurring form of vitamin K in vegetables. Research suggests that 1-2 mg daily is ideal for promoting optimal function of the GLA proteins, which safely direct calcium in the body.**
  • 1000 mcg Vitamin K2 (MK-4)—the highly bioavailable form. Intestinal bacteria produce vitamin K2, therefore a reduced microbial count in the gut will compromise vitamin K2 production. Also, poor conversion of K1 to K2 in some people makes supplementation with K2 (MK-4) important.
Tri-K™ is contraindicated in people on warfarin (Coumadin).
  • 50 mcg Vitamin K2 (MK-7)—this form of vitamin K is produced by food fermentation and has the special property of metabolizing slowly throughout the day, providing a continuous source of vitamin K in between supplementation dosages.
  • All forms of vitamin K are fat soluble and should be taken with a meal. Sunflower lecithin was added to enhance absorption.

Vitamin K can interact with several common medications, including blood-thinners – such as warfarin (Coumadin), anticonvulsants, antibiotics, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and weight-loss drugs. It is important to discuss this and all supplements with your health care provider before taking.

Nutritional supplements are not all created equal.

Over-the-counter supplement brands, including those you’d find at a health food store, often contain questionable additives like dyes, sugar, soy, gluten, fillers, and high fructose corn syrup; they even sometimes contain less of the active ingredients than are stated on the label. With little regulation in place for the supplement industry, it is important to trust the source of nutraceutical products.

Meridians and Marathons confidently recommends Designs for Health supplements because we know our patients are getting quality, clean ingredients that meet or exceed label claims, and are in bio-available forms for maximum efficacy. Designs for Health has all raw materials and finished supplements tested by a third-party lab for identity, potency, and unwanted contaminants like heavy metals, mold, and pesticides. This means you are getting what’s on the label, with nothing undesirable. Designs for Health is GMP certified, indicating that they adhere to good manufacturing practices.
